It is our firm belief that the key to effective conservation lies in the education of the general public and, more importantly, in the education of the young.

Gorgas Science Foundation began as a student organization in 1948 on the campus of Texas

Southmost College (then Brownsville Junior College). GSF was formally incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1983.

The name “Gorgas” honors General William Crawford Gorgas, whose research led to the cure of yellow fever. Dr. Gorgas's work began at the Fort Brown Cavalry Post Hospital in Brownsville; later, his labs served as the meeting area for the Gorgas Science Society student club.

It is our belief that community as well as individual growth comes through education. GSF is committed to the development of new educational materials for use in the classroom as well as for the general public.

GSF supports and encourages the pursuit of careers in science, medicine, and engineering.

GSF has developed and manages three field stations, two in northern Mexico’s El Cielo Biosphere Reserve and one in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. GSF has a continuing commitment to the production of high-quality educational films, books, field guides, and curricula.
