El Cielo: Forest in the Clouds

Released: 1993 - Format: VHS - Sound: Stereo - Duration: 56:13
Produced by Gorgas Science Foundation, Inc.

Along the eastern escarpment of Mexico's Sierra Madre Oriental exists an area known as El Cielo... an isolated enclave at the crossroads of North and South American flora and fauna. Eight distinct forest systems are found within its boundaries.

At the heart of El Cielo is a small pocket of cloud forest which exists half-way up the eastern face of the escarpment. Much of the year the forest is bathed in heavy mists as clouds from the Gulf of Mexico brush the steep slopes. El Cielo provides rare and exciting photography of Common Potoo, courtship of the 2 1/2" Bumblebee Hummingbird, pair bonding behavior in Barred Antshrikes and Magnificent Military Macaws in their remote canyons.

El Cielo has been captured in all its glory from the birthplace of rivers, to the rain shadow on the west, by the artistry of world class cinematographer John Bax.

John Bax emigrated from Belgium to Canada after World War II. At forty he did what few people are willing to do... he gave up a secure job to follow his dream. Known as "the man who loves birds" he has built a reputation as one of America's leading wildlife cinematographers. With heroic patience and perseverance he seeks out and shares with us the lives of his favorite subjects in their natural haunts

In El Cielo he captures the heart and soul of the forest in the clouds and gives us stunning portraits of its inhabitants.
